A barrier is anything that gets either in the way of communication that might result in losing people.

There are several barriers to losing people, and these take place at any stage in the communication and relationship process.  Barriers can lead to your communication be misinterpreted. Therefore, risk losing the relationship by causing confusion and misunderstanding.  Active communication involves overcoming these barriers and pass across clear and meaningful message.

Barriers are can be presented in several forms. Few of them are physical situations, attitudes, and behavior.

Physical Barrier

There are various forms of physical barrier. I will point out a few of those that are common around us and probably are often ignored. But these are generally the easiest to deal with.

Table barrier – A table can serve as a barrier to effective communication and can also result in losing people. When there is a table between you and your audience, it hinders the flow of communication. Loss of communication will definitely lead to loss of interest. Therefore, if the hindrance between you and your audience is a table, you can simply remove it, take it to one side and clear of the environment of any distracting tables.

Noise Barrier– If the distraction to your communication is noise, you can shut the door, appeal to the person/people making noise or if it’s within your authority, you can either turn down or off the source. Sometimes this may not work, so it is advised that you schedule your appointments, calls and so on, at a time when there is less distractions or when it can be handled. This is often true when you work at home as there can distractions from the children, relatives, spouse and other demanding domestic works.

Attitudes barriers

The barriers in forms of attitude are the ones you can see. For Instance, pretending to be involved in communication, lack of concern for what the speaker is talking about, or when the person deliberately decides not to listen for personal reasons. This usually leads to be bias which can make one to lose people.

Selective listening is when we choose what we to hear and what satisfies our ideas. We extract out what we want and miss priceless information. This can cost us our relationship. Therefore, Make yourself aware of where you tend to selectively listen and take action to do better.

Behavior barriers

There are both verbal and nonverbal barriers. A typical example of a verbal barrier is interrupting communication. This behavior is often called indiscipline, impolite and even rejection. A parent that always interrupts and never give the children room for communication may not be able to know what’s on their mind. A salesperson that interrupts buyers always will not learn what would keep the buyers coming again. Be careful not to control the conversation.

The nonverbal examples are basically just not paying attention. Most of the times these are expressed as avoiding eye contact, fiddling with things, sliding down in the chair, and so on. Listening is a vital key to effective communication and to keep the relationship. Therefore, always pay attention no matter what the distraction. Be attentive to your speaker and show appreciation. Listening is a deliberate skill, it is not by chance
